  20. I have a Service Manual for the Sony ICF-2010 and the alignment
  21. procedure forwarded by you from Genie is partially correct and
  22. I am amazed how the original author stumbled into it just by
  23. looking at the radio.  Following is the instructions taken from
  24. the manual, which leave something to be desired, since pictures
  25. of the actual circuit board are part of the procedure and are
  26. important for identifying the adjustment points.

  30.     Sync Adjustment

  32.     Note: Frequency setting may alter when adjusted with shield
  33.     plate (K) removed from sync board.

  36.     Setup:
  37.  
  38.     Band: AM
  39.     Mode: as directed
  40.     AM RF GAIN Control: as adequate
  41.     Frequency: as directed
  42.     MANUAL TUNE MODE: SLOW
  43.     SYNC switch: as directed

  45.     Remove shield plate (K) and connect a test lead to pin 6
  46.     (varicap voltage) for VTVM and frequency counter and
  47.     reinstall shield plate (K).
  48.  
  49.     (There is a picture of a PC board trace with arrows where to
  50.     attach the VTVM, Frequency counter, and Oscilliscope which
  51.     defy any way of being described here.  There are three
  52.     adjusting points; CT601 (a variable cap) which is located
  53.     through a small hole in the shielded SYNC unit itself, VT1 (a
  54.     pot) which is located directly next to the shielded SYNC unit
  55.     on the right, and VT2 a pot) which is on the left of the
  56.     shielded SYNC unit near the corner of the printed circuit
  57.     board.)

  60.     Procedure:

  62.     1. Correctly and just tune in the set to a known, stable and
  63.     strong AM station in NARROW and SYNC MODE off modes.
  64.  
  65.     2. Set mode to USB.
  66.  
  67.     3. Adjust VT1 for a 1.5V DC VTVM reading.
  68.  
  69.     4. Adjust CT601 for a zero-beat note and waveform.  (There is
  70.     a picture of the proper and improper oscilliscope waveforms.)
  71.  
  72.     5. Turn SYNC switch on and, adjust VT2 and set it to the
  73.     point at which SYNC LOWER indicator just turns off to SYNC
  74.     UPPER indication.
  75.     Slowly turn VT2 back to the point at which SYNC UPPER
  76.     indicator just turns off to SYNC LOWER indication, and leave
  77.     VT2 as is.

  79.     6. Turn MANUAL TUNING knob to obtain a frequency indication
  80.     just 100 Hz above the carrier of the station being received.
  81.     (only one advancement in the final digit).  Now, the SYNC
  82.     UPPER indicator should light.

  84.     7. Frequency counter should read 3.640 MHz + or - 100 Hz.

  87. Refer to the original message from Gary Pupurs on Genie as
  88. forwarded to this echo by Bill Oxner for a description on how to
  89. open, precautions to take, and how to identify the SYNC unit.
  90. Since my display is spot on, I did not open up the radio to
  91. verify the colors of the pots.

  93. The service manual is quite comprehensive and includes the owners
  94. manual instructions, disassembly instructions, adjustments and
  95. alignment procedures, voltage testpoint tables, sample waveform
  96. patterns, mounting diagram (ghost of PC board and components),
  97. schematic diagram, and parts list.  It can be ordered by calling
  98. 816/891-7550 and going through the automated voices to
  99. publications.  Cost was around $10 when I got mine three years
  100. and they do charge $3 for shipping and take plastic.

  102. As Gary Pupurs warned, fooling around without a Service Manual is
  103. not for the faint hearted and a trip to the Sony Service Repair
  104. Center will most certainly be more costly than the Manual.  I
  105. order a Service Manual as soon as I acquire any consumer electric
  106. item and they have certainly paid off.
